Burnley 2 Birmingham City 1

The Premier League match between Burnley and Birmingham City at Turf Moor on Saturday Oct 3rd 2009.

Burnley maintained their remarkable 100 per cent home league record when Birmingham City, promoted with them last season, were comprehensively beaten in a one-sided Turf Moor encounter.

Steven Fletcher! and Andre Bikey delivered their first Premier League goals as Burnley followed up previous home victories over Manchester United, Everton and Sunderland to establish a comfortable mid-table position.

Scottish international Fletcher, a £3 million summer-signing from Hibs, opened the scoring shortly into the second half before striking a post and forcing a splendid save from the visiting goalkeeper, Joe Hart.

Bikey's second 10 minutes later merely emphasised home superiority and Sebastian Larsson's added time free-kick was a mere consolation for out-classed Birmingham.

Burnley's early urgency suggested the visitors might be in for a torrid time and so it proved. Despite playing into the teeth of a fierce wind, they monopolised the first half although it was Birmingham, having sustained early pressure, who created the best opportunity of a somewhat ragged opening period.

Burnley's earl! y authorities stemmed from the first minute when Fletcher's ! attempt was deflected. Tyrone Mears shot wide and Robbie Blake delivered into the hands of Hart before the visitors responded with a 23rd-minute Rodger Johnson shot that was blocked.

Wade Elliott set up David Nugent and the striker's low shot brought a fine diving save from Hart.

A further Bikey shot came back off the visiting defence before the visitors replied to create the best opening so far. Johnson drove hard and low across the face of the home goal but Lee Bowyer with the goal invitingly at his mercy finished wretchedly.

But Burnley finally made their superiority count in the 52nd minute when Fletcher drove low under Hart following a surging run by Mears.

Five minutes later Fletcher almost had a second when his shot came back off a post after Blake had set him free and then in 59th minute Fletcher was again denied, this time by Hart.

However, a second quickly followed for Burnley and after playing a! neat one-two with Nugent Bikey drove beyond Hart before Larsson gave the score respectability with his added time free-kick.
